Monsanto and patent protection

The Supreme Court issued a unanimous opinion today protecting Monsanto’s “Round Up Ready” seeds from being grown and reused by a farmer a second time. Those who saw or read Joel Bakan’s The Corporation may remember that the controversy over something that sounds very similar, single use seeds, had a fairly prominent role in that piece.  For those hoping for a different opinion, less protective of intellectual property, this must be a discouraging loss. I am somewhat agnostic on this as intellectual property, in particularly patent law, is a fairly specialized field and one that I am not a specialist in. However, the decision was 9-0. Read it and weep if you are so inclined.
