Just came across this chilling piece on the great blog. Heads, You Lose It involves the tax authorities in Minnesota going after a couple for back taxes on the claim that they aren’t “really” artists because they haven’t made enough money. Apparently “starving artist” isn’t a legitimate career choice any more. If you are starving you’d better get off your duff and get a “real job” or so it seems that the tax authorities in Minnesota are saying to this couple. You’d think not making a good living at something would be “punishment” enough without throwing in a bunch of penalties. Although, as the blog points out, maybe their viewpoint is that the public shouldn’t have to “subsidize” art this way. I can’t really add anything more to this but to say that I find it chilling in the extreme.
